Contributions to Airborne Wind Energy

Wind energy plants only need the wings – in fact only tips of the wings – and the generator to produce electrical energy. However, the material consuming parts in particular the foundation, the tower and the nacelle, where the heavy generator is placed in up to 100 meters height and above, are all necessary for this technology. The idea of airborne wind energy is to “just let the wing tip fly” attached to a tether and leave the generator on ground. A small video from SkySails, one of the few companies developing such a kite power system, illustrates the idea:

This technology is still quite new: For approximately ten years only a few dozen research groups and companies are investigating and developing airborne wind energy. The main challenges are the fully automated start, landing and flying for a long period of time. Another challenge is making the kite resistant against UV radiation, salty air and other weather threatens. But the possibilities for such systems are endless: positive power control just by flying in higher altitudes or installing the system on a light-weight and transportable foundation system “like a buoy” in the deep sea.

In my master thesis, I developed a C++ control software library based on the open source Qt framework: the QtPLC library (screenshot above). This is currently used for the control system of small scale prototypes with which new control algorithms are developed and tested within my PhD research.
